The AV1 codec is on the way, which is an upgrade to the current codecs which are being used industry wide. It's being made by the Alliance of Open Media, which is a consortium of all the biggest tech companies in the world and it's promising to be royalty free as well. It will deliver a better streaming experience, which will have advantages for streaming services, gaming and more.
