Kingdom Come: Deliverance (KCD) stands as a landmark in the RPG genre, shedding high-fantasy tropes for a rigorous, historical simulation of 15th-century Bohemia. For those tracking the latest updates in our Kingdom Come: Deliverance Hub, the journey from a struggling indie pitch to a global powerhouse is one of the most remarkable stories in modern gaming development.

The Vision: Realistic Medieval Warfare

The concept for KCD was born from Daniel Vávra, the creative mind behind Mafia. Vávra wanted an RPG without dragons, magic, or chosen ones. In 2011, he co-founded Warhorse Studios with Martin Klíma. However, the industry was skeptical. Every major publisher rejected the pitch, claiming there was no market for a "hardcore" historical RPG.

The Kickstarter Gamble

By 2014, Warhorse was at a breaking point. To prove to a private investor that an audience existed, they launched a Kickstarter campaign with a goal of £300,000. The gaming community responded overwhelmingly, providing over £1.1 million. This success forced the industry to take notice and secured the funding necessary to move into full production using CryEngine.

Launch and Technical Hurdles

The game launched on February 13, 2018. While praised for its deep mechanics, historical accuracy, and writing, it was notoriously buggy at launch. Despite these technical flaws, the game’s soul resonated with players. Over the next year, Warhorse released numerous patches and four major DLCs—From the Ashes, The Amorous Adventures of Bold Sir Hans Capon, Band of Bastards, and A Woman's Lot—solidifying the game’s cult status.

The Legacy: Kingdom Come 2

Following the acquisition of Warhorse Studios by Embracer Group (via Koch Media) in 2019, the scope for the franchise expanded. By 2024, the original game had sold over 6 million copies. This success paved the way for Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, a massive sequel that continues Henry’s story on a significantly larger scale with even more refined combat and world-building.
