Square Enix has suspended sales of the FFXIV Starter and Complete Editions again because of ongoing player congestion, the original Splinter Cell is getting a Remake, and Assassin's Creed Odyssey will be free to play this weekend.

AC Odyssey Free Weekend

Assassin's Creed Odyssey, one of the most popular entries in the long-running Assassin's Creed franchise, is going to be available for free during this weekend. That means players can dive into the historical open-world adventure from today until Monday without having to spend a dime. This exciting news applies to multiple platforms, including Xbox, PC, Stadia, and PlayStation.

What makes this free weekend even better is that any progress made during this time will carry over if players decide to purchase the full game. So, if you've ever been curious about Assassin's Creed Odyssey but were hesitant to invest in it, this is the perfect opportunity to give it a try and see if it's the game for you.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey takes players on a journey to ancient Greece during the Peloponnesian War. You can choose to play as either Alexios or Kassandra, siblings with uncertain parentage, as they navigate a world full of political intrigue, mythical creatures, and memorable historical figures. With its vast open world, engaging storylines, and immersive gameplay mechanics, the game has garnered praise from both critics and players alike.

During this free weekend, players can explore the sprawling cities of Athens and Sparta, sail the Aegean Sea, and engage in epic battles against enemies in both land and sea combat. The game also features a robust progression system, allowing players to upgrade their skills, acquire powerful weapons and armor, and shape the destiny of their character through choices and dialogue options.

If you've been on the fence about Assassin's Creed Odyssey, now is the time to jump in and experience the wonders of ancient Greece firsthand. Whether you're a fan of the series or a newcomer, this free weekend provides an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in the rich world of Assassin's Creed and see what all the buzz is about.

Splinter Cell Remake

In other exciting gaming news, Ubisoft has recently announced that they are working on a remake of the original Splinter Cell game, first released 19 years ago. Splinter Cell is a beloved stealth-action franchise that has captivated players with its gripping narratives and innovative gameplay mechanics since its debut.

Ubisoft has stated that the Splinter Cell remake will be developed by Ubisoft Toronto, with an emphasis on utilizing their advanced Snowdrop engine. This engine, known for its stunning visuals and dynamic lighting and shadows, will breathe new life into the classic game, delivering a next-generation experience for both longtime fans and newcomers.

The original Splinter Cell game introduced players to Sam Fisher, a highly skilled covert operative working for a secret government agency called Third Echelon. The game's focus on stealth and shadow-based gameplay mechanics set it apart from other action titles at the time, and its success spawned a beloved franchise that has garnered a passionate fanbase over the years.

In the announcement, Ubisoft mentioned that the Splinter Cell remake will draw from the rich history of the brand, indicating that they intend to stay faithful to the original game's narrative while incorporating modern gameplay enhancements. This approach ensures that players will get to relive or experience for the first time the thrilling adventures of Sam Fisher in a fresh and engaging way.

For fans of the original game, Ubisoft has also posted a full interview on their website detailing why they chose to pursue a remake rather than a simple remaster. The interview sheds light on the development team's commitment to delivering a high-quality remake that captures the essence of the original while leveraging modern technology to provide an enhanced experience.

As someone who played the original Splinter Cell game when it was released, I am personally thrilled about the prospect of a remake. The idea of reliving the iconic moments and stealthy missions with updated visuals and gameplay mechanics is incredibly exciting. If you're a fan of stealth games or have yet to experience the Splinter Cell series, the remake promises to be a must-play title.

FFXIV Suspends Sales Again

On a less positive note, there have been ongoing congestion problems with Final Fantasy XIV, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and published by Square Enix. The game's director, Naoki Yoshida, recently addressed the issue in a post on the official Lodestone website to provide the player community with an update.

Yoshida acknowledged the frustratingly long wait times players have experienced when trying to log into the game, preventing them from enjoying the vast world of Final Fantasy XIV. To compensate for the inconvenience caused, the development team initially granted seven days of game time to the affected players. However, due to the persistent issues, an additional 14 days of game time will be provided to those affected.

The congestion problems stem from the overwhelming number of players during peak hours, which exceeds the server capacity. As a temporary solution, Square Enix has decided to suspend the sale and delivery of the Final Fantasy XIV Starter Edition and Complete Edition. Additionally, new registrations for the free trial version of the game will also be temporarily suspended.

Yoshida also addressed a specific login error, known as error 2002, which has been causing further frustrations for players. He explained that the error was a result of a bug related to a login program created back in version 1.0 of Final Fantasy XIV. Thanks to player reports and testing, the development team was able to identify the cause and expressed their apologies for not discovering it earlier.

Square Enix has been working tirelessly to address the server congestion issue, and they aim to rectify it with the upcoming Patch 6.01, scheduled for release on Tuesday. This update is expected to stabilize the login process and provide a smoother experience for players eager to explore Final Fantasy XIV's latest expansion, Endwalker.

Despite the ongoing challenges, it's important to note that Final Fantasy XIV Endwalker offers a vast and captivating world for players to immerse themselves in. With a rich storyline, engaging gameplay mechanics, and a dedicated player community, the game has received high praise and is worth exploring, especially for fans of the Final Fantasy franchise.

In conclusion, this weekend's AC Odyssey free trial and the announcement of the Splinter Cell remake showcase the ever-evolving landscape of the gaming industry, offering players exciting opportunities to relive beloved classics or discover new experiences. As for Final Fantasy XIV, while the current server congestion issues may be frustrating, the game's potential for an immersive and rewarding MMORPG experience remains strong.
