FFXIV Job Unlock: Dark Knight Guide

A step-by-step guide to unlocking the Dark Knight job in Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward.
Unlock Quick Facts
Quest Name Our End
Starting NPC Ishgardian Citizen
Location Ishgard - The Pillars (X: 13.2, Y: 8.8)
Prerequisites Level 50 & Access to Ishgard (Heavensward MSQ)
Role Tank

Step-by-Step Instructions

The Dark Knight is one of three jobs introduced in the Heavensward expansion (along with Astrologian and Machinist). Unlike base game jobs, it does not require a base class.

1. Reach Ishgard

Since the Dark Knight starts in Ishgard, you must progress the Main Scenario Quest until you complete "Before the Dawn" (the finale of A Realm Reborn). This allows you to enter the Heavensward expansion areas.

2. Find the Starting NPC

Once in Ishgard, teleport to the Aetheryte Plaza and head to the zone The Pillars. Navigate to coordinates X:13.2, Y:8.8 near the Tribunal. Look for an NPC named "Ishgardian Citizen".

3. Complete "Our End"

Speak to the citizen to begin the quest "Our End". This quest involves a short investigation that leads you to finding the body of a Dark Knight and taking up their mantle.

You will be rewarded with:

  • Soul of the Dark Knight (Job Stone)
  • Steel Claymore (Level 30 Weapon)
  • Outsider's Attire Coffer (Level 30 Gear)

Starting at Level 30

Note that even though you must be Level 50 to reach Ishgard, the Dark Knight job starts at Level 30. You will need to level it up in dungeons or Deep Dungeons (like Palace of the Dead) to catch up to the MSQ level.

Why Play Dark Knight?

Dark Knight is a tank job that excels at magic damage mitigation. It utilizes MP to fuel powerful attacks and shields, most notably "The Blackest Night," which is widely considered one of the best tank cooldowns in the game. It also features one of the most praised job storylines in FFXIV.
